When
Windsor merchants began talking about a Plan B to save this
year’s 21st annual Windsor~West Hants Pumpkin Regatta,
phones rang, social media and emails blew-up and there were
media inquiries from across the land. There were so many
gourd ideas, that “Plan P” took shape and now five people
will have a chance to paddle across Lake Pesaquid and win
great prizes.
Thanks to the efforts of the Dill Family
Farm, 5 giant pumpkins are available to be paddled across
Lake Pesaquid. Local community groups are stepping up to
create lots of excitement at the Windsor/Falmouth
waterfronts on Saturday, October 19.
It’s ironic that the very first regatta
had five intrepid souls taking up the challenge to paddle
one of Howard Dill’s Atlantic Giant pumpkins across Lake
Pesaquid, beginning the international craze of Giant Pumpkin
Paddling. And now at the 21st annual Pumpkin Regatta, five
paddlers will keep the pumpkin paddling dream alive while
supporting local crop growers.
Chance To Paddle
And the Chance to Paddle one of these
five giant gourds will be a major fundraiser for farmers
whose crops were severely damaged when Hurricane Dorian blew
across Nova Scotia on September 7, 2019. All Proceeds will
be administered through the Hants County Federation of
Agriculture.
Tickets will be sold at Windsor Home
Hardware and at the Spoke & Note, Windsor, and administered
through the Windsor Business Enhancement Society. On
Thursday, October 17, twenty-five (25) semi-finalists will
be drawn and notified that they have been short-listed to
paddle in this years regatta.
On Saturday, October 19, local merchants
will begin preparing the PVCs, personal vegetable craft, at
the Windsor waterfront. At 11:00 am, semi-finalists will be
introduced and get to inspect the pumpkin boats. At 12 NOON,
five names will be drawn from the semi-finalists in
attendance. First name drawn has first pick for the
perfect pumpkin boat, second name, picks the second boat,
until all five paddlers get their pumpkin boats. The Regatta
will start from the Falmouth side of Lake Pesaquid beginning
at 3:00 pm.
